"When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then you shall act." — 2 Samuel 5:24
When God Stirs, We Must Act
The members of Christ’s Church must be prayerful—always seeking the unction of the Holy Spirit to rest upon their hearts, that Christ’s kingdom may come, and His “will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” But when God shows His favor to Zion, such seasons should stir us like the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees. We must then be doubly prayerful, doubly earnest, wrestling more fervently at the throne of grace than ever before. Action must be swift and vigorous. The tide is flowing—now let us pull with all our strength for the shore. Oh for Pentecostal outpourings and Pentecostal labors!
Christian, there are moments in your own life “when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees.” You feel a peculiar power in prayer; the Spirit of God gives you joy and gladness; Scripture seems to open before you as never before; God’s promises are applied with power to your heart; you walk in the light of His countenance; you experience unusual liberty in devotion, and your communion with Christ becomes closer than was your custom. Now, at such times, this is the moment to act! Now is the time to cast off every evil habit and pursue greater holiness, while the Spirit of God strengthens your infirmities.
Spread your sail wide—but remember what you sometimes sing:
“I can only spread the sail;
Thou! Thou! must breathe the auspicious gale.”
Be sure your sail is raised. Don’t let the wind pass you by because you were unprepared. Seek God’s help, that you may be more earnest in duty when your faith is strong, more persistent in prayer when you find liberty at the throne of grace, and more holy in your conversation as you walk closely with Christ.
